Definition of Express Entry
Canada's points-based online system for managing permanent residence applications.
Why it matters in practice for applicants
Express Entry ranks candidates in a pool using the Comprehensive Ranking System and invites the highest scores in regular draws. Profiles stay valid for a year, and improvements such as a new language result or a completed credential assessment update your score while you wait. Invitations lead to a 60-day document sprint, which is where prepared files separate from disorganised ones.
Practical example and scenario
A candidate whose CRS sits below recent cutoffs takes the IELTS improvement route, gains 30 points, and receives an invitation in the next general draw.
Frequently asked questions
How long does an Express Entry profile stay active?
Twelve months. Score improvements can be added any time during that year.
What happens after I receive an invitation?
You have 60 days to submit the complete application, so documents like reference letters and police certificates should be pre-staged before the draw.
